My son's G5 PPC has the following spec.

Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,2
CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.6 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.5f2

It chugs along, and not particularly fast.
I'm tempted to increase the RAM on board to 2GB, and keep the option to put in another 2GB later if the increase is worth it.
The crucial.com/uk scanner tells me that the RAM it needs is
DDR memory with support for DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 speeds.

I seem to recall when we first bought the Macs that they require specific DDR RAM and that not all DDR RAM is the same.
Is this true or will any DDR RAM within the spec be OK?

I also understand the PC3200 is faster than 2700. Can the machine make real use of the faster memory, or am I just as well off buying the 2700 sticks.

A small part of me is telling me that the RAM in the machine is playing up a little... I just get that feeling...And this could be part of the reason for the web browser crashing. The machine could do with speeding up, as it's useless when showing certain video files etc and the extra RAM should help here.

Any suggestions?

TIA
Darren

You need PC3200 memory for the G5, and it does need to be low density and Mac compatible. Here is a link to OWC, Mac Specialists, check out the memory and shop around:-

Whilst additional modules will assist, don't expect too much as you are stuck with the 1.6GHz processor with slow bus speed. There is nothing you can do to speed up the CPU other than buy a faster, newer machine.

I use Kingston value ram in my 1.8, took it from 1.5 gigs to 7 gigs. All in about $220 CDN. WORLD of difference.

crucial has a great site that finds your specific ram for you. they are reasonably priced and excellent in build quality. unless you do some major multiple programs or photo/movie intensive stuff i wouldnt go much higher than 4 gigs. just my 2 cents.
