External HD

I am currently moving from my Vista PC to a 21" imac. I have 1000s of photos on a external HD, will this work if I plug it into the USB of the imac. I am frightened of trying in case I lose or corrupt the photos of the family I have taken over many years. Thanks in advance

I just took some videos off of a friend's PC formatted external HD to my older MBP via USB and it was not an issue.

No, it'll work fine. I routinely display photos from an external on my PC as well as my Mac.

But a word of caution here: Storing family photos that you can't afford to lose on a hard drive is asking for trouble. Hard drives fail - it's not a matter of if they'll fail, it a matter of when they'll fail.

Be sure to backup your photos on to DVD media (I know, you'll need lots of DVDs) or another hard drive. What would be ideal is if you have a Blue Ray drive. Blue Ray disks have a very large capacity.

Yeah I have my DVD collection on my HD for my AppleTV and I have the discs in storage in case...

I agree. A backup would be a good idea. If the pictures are that important to you then you shouldn't have just one copy.

I always back up with TM and on things that can't be reloaded or replaced easily they
are put on a DVD or two.
