Does iphone act as a cell phone repeater?

Greetings,

I read on the internet that an iphone acts as a repeater for iphones that are further away from the cell tower. The problem being that one's iphone is then receiving and transmitting when the user is not actually making a call, thus exposing the person to more radiation.

Anybody know about this?

Its just a sales pitch for there headsets.

iPhone along with other smart phones are data devices. They are constantly transmitting data.

It does not act as a repeater for other phones though.

If you are not using your iphone, what data would it be sending, other than normal cell phone links to the tower?

E-mail for one.... Then there is any application that is pushing data to your phone.

If you have push notifications turned on, for example, or your email set to check every five seconds (bad idea!).

If the phone has GPS (such as the iPhone 3G/3GS), then it is constantly updating your position. Unless actually powered down.
