snow leopard serial key

hey guys im new here

i got a imac with snow leopard 10.6.2 and i was about to format the harddrive. i will be reinstalling the snow leopard os back on, but i will need my serial key. I was wondering is there a way i can retrieve my serial key from the imac before i format.(i know this can be done in windows)

I never got the serial key with the imac since i bought it used. the past owner has lost it.

There is no serial key.

so i can just insert the dvd and i dont need to put in a code? in that case couldnt someone install the same os for many computers?

Yes, that is technically possible. In other words, it works.
There are gray colored discs, and black discs. The gray ones will work on one model of Mac only. But, if you have 200 of that model, it will work on all of them. It will not work for a different model. (redundant on purpose) The black disc is known as a "retail disc" and will install on any Mac with the appropriate specs for that version.

I can confirm this from personal experience. My Snow Leopard Macbook Pro lost its HD recently, so I bought a generic HD, installed it, and then installed the OS onto it from the original disk. No problem. I did have major problems subsequently trying to install the iLife applications software (iPhoto, iMovie, etc) from the other supplied disk, but finally managed by by a very roundabout route. If you experience that problem come back here.
