I am downloading a ½ Gb file and the site suggested using a Download Manager. I remember that in the dark old days I used to use one on my PC but I didn't know why really.

I've read around the Forums and there doesn't seem to be any strong impression that they are necessary.

Should I consider it or is it a waste of time?

Waste of time and in fact may even hinder fast downloads. Speed Downloader was one and user had to pay another licensing fee each time a new OS was released. And have yet to see any speed increase over and above what the OS manages.
