I must have hit a keystroke, I have a spinning gear on desktop that looks like an accessibility icon. Everything works fine but there is a spinning gear over the wallpaper when I close all the open windows. Any ideas...it is annoying.

You've got some app that is attempting to open or quit and is stuck.
Open up Activity Monitor (in Applications / Utilities) and see if there is an app using an inordinate amount of CPU percentage - try a force quit on it there.
