Trash can icon

I am running 10.4 on iMac PPC and just now when I empty the trash can the icon in the dock still shows a 'full' can. I click on the trash can and confirm that there are no files remaining. I have run all maintenance in Onyx and have done a re-start with the trash can still appearing as 'full'.
