10.3.9 how to use a different printer driver

Yeah, I know...go buy a new mac. I plan to in a few months but for now I'm trying to use an HP Photosmart C4780 (USB) on my pre-intel mac 10.3.9. HP said to use the Deskjet 990c driver which I have installed (some loss of functionality). My question is how to I force my mac to use the 990c driver when it doesn't detect that printer?
