I was looking at the My Passport Essential 500 GB Portable Hard Drive for my backup. The apple one is $200 and this one is $79. Will it work as my back with Time Machine?

"The Apple one" (aka Time Capsule) is also an 802.11n router and print server in addition to being just a hard drive. Thus the higher price.

But yes, the WD one will work fine.
