Colloquy help!

I dont get this tool. Its got a weird interface. I have connected to a server, logged into a chat room and can post at will. however, I just dont get how those highlights work. When others address me in the chat, a bell or some sound plays, colloquy bounces and their message actually pops up over all my windows. can someone please tell me how its done?

I go to prefs-> highlights and then what? the colloquy's documentation is the worst I've seen so far. Sorry for venting out my frustration.

Or pref / alerts and set how you want it to inform you . If you want to send a message to just one member just click on there name on the screen and a secondary window will open and type the message.
