I'm considering buying the Viewsonic 2033wm, but I'm not sure if a) it will connect to my MacBook Pro (Late 2008 not unibody), and b) if my MBP will be able to drive it? Any help would be appreciated.

If this is the one Viewsonic VX2033wm
It has both DVI and VGA input, your mac has a DVI port on its right side so all you need is the included cable.
The requirements say that it needs a PC or Macintosh computer with DVI or VGA output, so I assume it will work fine with your mac.

That's the one. The specs say something about a Power Mac and I don't know if that's because it needs more video power than my laptop can provide or because they are using it as the generic for "Mac PC".

I told a friend about my plans to use it with my MBP and the BookArc Bookarc - Bookarc - Twelve South and he tells me it will destroy my laptop by trapping in the heat. Any thoughts on that?

No, I think it wil be perfectly safe to use Bookarc when the external display is attached.
Besides, even apple endorses using your mac closed.

You must have the early 2008 MacBook Pro, because according to Mactracker, a Late 2008 MacBook Pro is already the unibody line.
As you can see in the screenshot, it supports external displays up to 2560 by 1600 pixels.
