Leopard crashes on waking

Er... big cat sleepwalking? Every time I wake my MDD from sleep and try to open an application it freezes, usually with the Spinning Beach Ball Of Death. I have repaired permissions, but if I verify right after that there are more repairs needed. I swapped the HD into another MDD and the problem has come with it. The HD is a new 250 gig MDT drive, the person I just bought the machine from had installed 10.5.8 and a load of other stuff on it. Can anyone help please?
