Using a UK (O2) iPhone abroad

Hi,
Anybody done this? How did it work? I assume you just turn the phone into airplane mode and use the wifi connection until you get back to the UK. Any tips welcome.

Turning airplane mode on turns wifi & 3g off,contact 02 and ask whether your service plan allows you international roaming free of charge.I'am with 02 and i have roaming foc.
