StuffIt Free

Does StuffIt free only open files, or allow you to compress too? Their website is unclear obviously, as they want you to buy Deluxe.

The free Stuffit is just an expander. It in fact used to be called Stuffit Expander and still might be.

There are Three versions of Stuffit:

Standard - pay for, $49, compression/expansion/encryption - trial available
Deluxe - pay for, $79, compression/expansion/encryption/self healing/backup - trial available
Expander - free, expansion

Thank you very much. Guess I have to buy it haha. I am trying to get an alreay zipped file into a rar to try to make it smaller.

Did you try BetterZip or Zipeg?

I did, but neither got it as small as I need it.

Interesting. The algorithms are pretty much universal.

Ah ok. I just thought maybe a .rar would be smaller, but I admit I could be totally wrong.

Ok I went ahead and bought StuffIt Deluxe...not that pricey. I will let you know how it works. Thanks for the help.

What are you compressing? If it's compressing a single file - like a jpg, and existing zip, 7z, etc., chances are it won't get much smaller (actually it might get bigger). If you're dealing with a bunch of files, you may want to split them up amongst a couple of zip files for the intended party.
