If you go 'get info' on a folder you get the option to lock it, what does this do as I tried to lock a folder on I can still open it normally?

If u are trying to protect sensitive info then check out disk utility in Applications > Utilities. You can put files to protect into a desktop folder and use disk utility to make a password protected .dmg file of that folder. Beauty of that is that you can then carry it round on Flash Drive which if lost is still protected.

Locking a folder just means you can't delete it by putting it in the Trash and emptying it.
