Hi,
I have a 30 GB folder that I want to upload to Google docs for backup, but their limit on such is 1 GB. Is there any crazy program that could compress 30 GB to 1?

Just out of curiosity, if it is possible, whatever format it would turn it into; would google docs still recognize it?

Update: Google Documents now recognizes and accepts any file types. So it is just a matter of getting my file under 1GB. Any advice for extreme copression?

split it up

No, because I seriously doubt any program can achieve that huge differential. But, it's a folder, not a file. Make more folders!

Hmm lol fair enough. Is there no program, however, that can turn, say, 30 GB into 1 GB?

It depends on the types of files you are compressing. Text compresses quite nicely. Common audio and video, since they are likely compressed already, do not compress much at all.

Call me a pessimist, but I'm guessing that whatever he has 30GB of, it's not text. :)

It is text, audio, video, and images. And NO, it is not porn.

I didn't intend to imply anything -- if I even *had* 30GB of porn, I certainly wouldn't store it on Google Docs! :)

Generally speaking, text compresses down at a huge rate, but most standard formats for audio, video and images are already compressed, so further compression is usually minimal.

If you have at least 60GB free space on your HD, you can try a simple test: create a folder with all the data you're talking about in one folder, then right-click the folder and choose "compress." Then see what the results are.
