I have just replaced my old g5 Quad for a new G5 8 core and placed it into the same network I have been running for years.
I have a shared folder on each pc (one xp and the other vista )
Since adding the new mac I can connect to the old xp pc but I can't connect to the shared folder on the vista computer.
I have tried reseting up the shared folder but I have given up.
Any ideas welcome
Thanks

Do you have password protected sharing enabled on the Vista machine?

How are you trying to connect?

Can you ping the vista machine successfully?

If so, can you connect using an IP address (CMD+K) in Finder

Can the vista machine see the Mac?

OK that's good. Assuming 192.168.1.1 is the IP address of your Vista machine (and not your router) it's good news.

At least your Mac can 'see' the Vista machine

So the issue is in connecting to a folde,r not reaching the machine. Packets are leaving and returning to your Mac so it looks like an issue on the Vista machine.

Are you using the Vista Firewall? If so can you temporarily disable it. Just for the purposes of testing?

OK.

Try turning off your Vista firewall and try again.

Also which version of OSX are you running?

If you open the Vista Firewall Advanced Settings window you'll be able to access the Vista firewall logs and see what's being blocked. Once you know which IP/port/protocal etc is being blocked from your Mac you'll be able to add an exception for it.

how do I get to that?
the advanced tab in the firewall setting only has an option for network connections to protect and restore defaults
am I looking in the wrong place?
