External HD Question

I was wondering, if Windows cannot copy large files like 4 Gigs onto a fat32 formatted HD, can Mac transfer files that large onto it? If not, how do you backup your Mac? Would you need to format the external HD to the Mac format?

I dont think the mac can if you just drag and drop, but Im not 100% sure, but if you use a backup app of some sort, I think it would be possible.
