I ordered 4gb of ram for my iMac back in the end of June '09 for $64.97. It was this Kingston kit from Amazon. I just acquired another MacBook and want to upgrade the ram to 4gb also, so I went back to amazon to order another one. Now the price is up to $109.99! I even went back and checked with my previous order history to make sure...

What happen in the past 7 months to make the cost almost double? Does anyone have any suggestions to cheaper ram?

it depends on the type of RAM. you can find cheaper out there, but you are going to have to pay if you want a specific type.

I havent done the research yet to check out compatibility, but I'm sure they both take the same specs on RAM. I got that link from my order history with Amazon, it says I paid $65 for it but now has it listed at $110.

I now have 2 MacBooks, I got both of them in trades I made. Both are Core 2 Duo, but one is a 2.0 (mid 2007) and the other is a 2.1 (Early 2008). I did notice on the apple spec page that the 2.0 and can only have up to 2gb of ram while the 2.1 can have up to 4gb of ram. I'm guessing they changed something in the MacBooks.

I plan on keeping the 2.1ghz MacBook and selling off the other to buy a iPad when they come out.

The price varies based on supply and demand. As certain types of memory are no longer manufactured, the price goes up.

Check prices on other vendors, specifically Crucial.com and otherworldcomputing.com.

I just checked New Egg and some Ram prices have gone up from the last time a month ago I checked. Still the prices there seem a lot better overall than that Amazon price.

667MHz DDR2 ram and that's why I think. Most ram that is being used in modern machines is DDR3 these days. And the old DDR2 ram will go up because it's old technology and hard to get a hold of when less and less manufactures make it.
