Docx files will not open in iWork Pages

I have read that word files can be opened with pages but this does not seem to be working for me. I have iWork 09. I have uninstalled and installed a couple times. I set the doc files to always open with pages. But everytime it comes up with "The document couldn't be opened".
Any help would be much appreciated as i really do not like office 2008 :D
