Greetings! In every application on my MacBook except MS Word 2008 I can use

fn + alt(option) + delete to delete the entire word to the right of the cursor..

.. Am I missing something?!

Word and the other Office programs are pathetic when it comes to integrating standard features of OS X applications. The example you gave isn't the only one; try using Command-Delete to clear a whole line. Inexplicably, it does the same thing as Option-Delete. If you want that (and other Mac-like) behavior from an advanced text editor, check out Pages (or Bean, if you only need a little more than TextEdit can offer).
