Is there a maximum number of photos/MB which iPhoto 6 can store? As the Library grow larger, does iPhoto run more slowly?

The limit is only that of your hard drive. And as for the program itself no it wont run slower as the files are not stored in it but in its library on the aforementioned hdd.

Scrolling through large collections in iPhoto can get sluggish.

There are other options for rapidly viewing and managing really large collections. (ahem)
