Hi there,

Im having shutdown problems on my current gen MBP 13". My shutdown time used to be about 2 seconds- after installing parallels it was 15 sec.

Thats fine, but recently its about 45 seconds or more. I even get the spinning wheel on the blue screen- not the colored beach ball, but the same bars you see on start up.

Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Its getting pretty annoying waiting SO long for it to shutdown.

Thank you!!

Btw I have reset the PRAM and repaired permissions, no help from either.

EDIT: Just realized this should be in software, not hardware. Very sorry! Mod, please move? Thanks!

I figure you've probably already done this, but give Onyx a go? That never hurts and it's surprises me how often that fixes little speed issues. I've never had a problem that drastic, but Onyx's always worked for me.

Also, I assume it turns on normally?

Are you on line while shutting down? Might be an internet response that is slow getting thru, before allowing completion of shut down sequence.

I will run Onyx now and report back. It boots fine, 15-20 seconds.

I am online while shutting down but I have been on the same connection for several months with no problems until recently.

Ok, I ran all 3 scripts in Onyx and verified and repaired system file permissions.

I restarted and timed the next shutdown, a full 62 seconds :-(

but what software have you installed in those months and is one of them 'phoning home' during shutdown sequence. Try quitting all Apps then doing a shutdown and timing it if need be.

Ok, I quit all apps and turned off airport (no ethernet plugged in). This time, I got the black spinning wheel on my desktop for about 70 seconds and never saw the blue screen at all. It went straight to black "off". weird.....

What size is your HD, and how much free space have you got left?

This could be a good reason for slow boot and shutdown....
The general rule of thumb is 15% minimum free space, many say 25-30%... but even then, to keep my machine at optimal performance, I don't allow it to go under 50%.

Download a little utility called Applejack, and print and read the directions and reboot in single user mode and run Applejack auto.

Glad to hear...
Also, I thought I would throw this your way :)
This is just a 320GB example, and how cheap it is:
320GB 2.5" Seagate Momentus 7200.4 7200RPM... (ST9320423AS) at OWC
You can check out memory and storage upgrades on that site by putting in your mac specs if you think about going that way in the near future.
It's a great reputable site.

He did... I don't know how I missed that, esp since I was wondering why a latest gen MBP would only have 80GB HD

Wait. So that's all you did? Just went to see the system log and it was fixed?
I don't get it. How was it fixed?

Coz I think I'm having the same shutdown problem and I just want to know how you did it.

BTW, how do you go to system log?

Just opening the log did not fix it, whatever "it" was. Looks like something to do with the network.

But, to look at your logs, open up Console, found in Applications / Utilities.
