Hi there

I have a Macbook pro with OS X and my partner has a PC laptop with XP operating system. I'd like to get an external drive so that we can both use the same drive and back up our files - rather than having 2 drives. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Yes it's possible, but will require that the new external drive be partitioned or divided in two. The Mac will backup only to an HFS Extended formatted drive (using Time Machine or cloning software) while the Windows machine will work best backing up to a drive formatted to NTFS.

My recommendation is to purchase two drives. One for your Mac, the other for Windows. Easier to sort out and less likely to run into problems.

Regards.
