Internet (WiFi) only works when I open the Dashboard

Quite often, my wifi connection will be quite slow (0-3kbs) until I open the dashboard, when it will then jump to more normal speeds (700 to 1.2 mps) while the dashboard is open. When I 'close' the dashboard, speeds return to near nothing.

I am in Central London, and have an O2 5M broadband connection. I was unable to find anything on the internet about a similar problem. Have restarted / updates / closed all widgets / etc. Still same problem. My MacBook Pro roommate thinks I am crazy.

Has anyone see anything similar?

anyway, this is very strange. how are you measuring your wifi speeds? is the 0-3kbs from a speedtest through a browser?
