When I try to delete a file by dragging it to the trash I get a message that the file will be permanently deleted. If I right click and try to have it deleted, the same thing happens. Is like the trash is out of commission.
How can I change this behavior?

Thank you

Sounds like the permissions to your .Trash folder (the folder in your home directory that is actually your Trash) have been changed. Read my post here that should help to see if this is your problem and if it is, how to fix it.

Simply go into Finder > Preferences > Advanced and make sure "show Warning Before Emptying Trash' is not selected.

Simply go into Finder > Preferences > Advanced and make sure "show Warning Before Emptying Trash' is not selected.

OR, I just had this issue and am pretty new to the Mac as well, try:

Finder>Preferences>Advanced>uncheck "Empty Trash Securely"

The OP stated that he is getting a message that anytime something is dragged to the Trash, he is told that it will be deleted permanently. harry, that checkbox only gives you a warning once files are in the Trash and tater, yours only securely empties the Trash (again, with files already in it). The OP can't even get files into the Trash.

Like I noted earlier, others (and I) have experienced this before and it appears to be due to permission changes on the Trash folder. Have you tried my original solution?

That message is normal with network volumes, or disks that are formatted for Windows.
