Handbrake: Convert Small Part of a Movie

I'm wondering if it is possible to convert only a small part of a full-size video using Handbrake. I'm doing a presentation in class and need to use a clip of only about a minute and a half. It seems crazy to have to load an hour-long video onto a drive just to play a short snippet of it. Also, it'd be easier to just play it, rather than having to find the part of the video that I need. I appreciate any help you all can give me. Thanks!

With handbrake, the best you can do is if the master your converting from (whether it be a unencrypted DVD or a mkv file or m4v file, etc.) is to use the chapters to narrow down to the time frame you need (of course, you'd need to know the region your clip falls in) then use something else to reduce it the rest of the way.

If you're converting from a .mov or mp4 or avi, etc. to something with just the small time frame (ie: not ripping from dvd), you might want to look into mpegstreamclip which allows you to set in and out points for conversion.

If you're using Snow Leopard, you can use QuickTime X to trim the clip. Open your clip and click the little box with the arrow coming out of it. Select "Trim..." and drag the yellow edges around what you want to save. Press Trim and go to File > "Save As..." to save your clip somewhere.

set up a point and shoot camera in front of the TV or computer and make a short movie of the section you want. its wont be perfect but it may work well enough for your school project.

One alternative is MPEG Streamclip. It's easy to use.
