FileMaker is used to create databases. Whereas AppleWorks is a combo application. It includes functions for word processing, spreadsheets, painting, drawing, presentations and databases.

Filemaker is a Pro Database program. It's been around for years on the Mac. Appleworks is a basic home all in one program sort of like Microsoft Works for the PC. For simple home type databases with say Names and phone numbers, Appleworks would be fine, but if you want a more professional solution, Filemaker would be the one to get.
