So, after nearly five years with my 2 GHz G5, its time to add another hard drive. Excuse me for being naive, but what kind do I need to get? Researching the forums, it seems I need a SATA drive- but is that all I need to look for? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Yes...you need an SATA hard drive...and it needs to be a 3.5" drive (not a 2.5" laptop drive).

Welcome to the Forums.

Yes, SATA is correct [source: Mactracker]. So, how big a drive do you want/need?

There are more opinions about hard drives than you've had hot dinners, but the general scrum consists of Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi - and probably in that order. Samsung puts in an appearance occasionally. My personal preference is for Hitachi. Read CNet or other independent reviews about any brand and size of drive you think you might want, and then post back for further comment.

Thanks for the info- I'm looking for maximum space, so I'm looking at 1 TB or so- will this cause any problems- do I need more memory? (only at 1.5 now) Or something else?

Installing a 1 TB drive sould not be a problem. BTW...are we talking about a G5 iMac or a G5 Tower.

Also...please don't confuse "memory" (ram)...with hard drive space...they are not related! No you don't need to add any more ram (memory)...at least not due to the installation of a new hard drive.

Hope this helps,

Memory and drive size are not interdependent, but your Mac will always benefit from maximum RAM. Which model of G5 do you have?

A 1 Tb drive in a G5 should pose no problems. Fitting it is a straightforward process too, there are probably some videos about How To on YouTube.

I have a G5 tower from about 2005. I just wanted to make sure before I go off and starting fiddling with things inside the computer. I want this computer to keep working and be relavent for as long as possible, so having a lot of hard drive space (and soon) more memory is going to be very important.

Thanks for all the info, it will come in handy!

Make sure you get the correct memory modules as there are two G5's from 2006, a Dual Processor, which uses DDR memory and AGP Graphics Cards, and a Dual Core which uses faster DDR2 memory and PCIE Graphic Cards.

Add to the sum total of your learning and knowledge about your Mac by using Mactracker http://mactracker.ca/ which will give you extensive information about the possible and permissible upgrades to the G5.
