My 27 2.66 quad-core iMac purchase date is coming up and I'm also switching ISPs before i buy my baby. Question is, which ethernet cable should i be buying in order to get the best wired internet connection? As you can guess, I'm against wireless :p. The different types of ethernet cables etc confuses me and I'm unsure of what to buy so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you asked your ISP what they recommend?

You want either Cat5e or Cat6 for any new cables you buy today.

Most of them for sale nowadays will be at least Cat5e.

Either one will give you gigbit speed availability on your home network (if everything else is gigabit capable).

Exactly what bobtomay said. Look up monoprice.com for the cables, very inexpensive and reliable.

Thanks for the link...I hadn't heard of them before. Good prices & the shipping's not too bad either!:)

Yeah, but do you really need one that's 25m long.

Depends on the distance from where my setup is going to be to the router, probably not 25m but need to measure it still.

Edit: Just measured the distance and it's getting on for 20 odd meters. Will the connection slow down significantly over an ethernet wire of that length?
