on a pc if you clicked on an icon you could click on properties t change them on a mac you can't

In addition to the Get Info as advised, you can change the icon picture. This is especially useful for folders.
In the top left of the Get Info window you should see a small image. That can be changed with the copy-paste method. Select and copy a favorite image, then click the Info image, then Edit-Paste.
