• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

You should be able to hook the camcorder up via USB and have iMovie import the footage. I did notice one thing on Apples site though when I was checking for your camcorders compatibility (which Apple states that yours will work with iMovie 09) - although this support article doesn't specify your camcorder in the text, it was linked to from your camcorder model in the compatibility chart (ie: this may apply to your camcorder because it's a Sony):

iMovie ?08 or Later: Sony HDR compatibility

But usually with AVCHD camcorders like yours, you should be able to just plug it into the computer via usb and then either iMovie should auto recognize it and pop up a window to import or you should be able to select to import the footage from (I think) the file dropdown. (hopefully if I've made a mistake on how to get iMovie to import the footage, xstep will correct me, he uses iMovie a lot more then I do)
