Hi I am moving from Australia to live in Ireland (they use the british power plug) and was wondering if I had to purchase an entire new macbook charger or can I just purchase the british plug pin and safely charge my macbook??

Just get an adaptor for pin arrangement if needed then if it is a permanent move you can always get one of these later. The power adaptor will sort voltages automatically;

Just don't get tripped up by this difference;

Yeah, I need to figure that out, whether I only need the adapter for my MBP or do I need a step down transformer.

Like Collin Bl & 6string said... but I'd advise on getting a "grounded" travel/British adapter and you are good.
The Macbook chargers are multi voltage so you won't need a transformer but I would buy a "Belkin" surge protector though. ;D

Got plenty of surge protector to choose from since none of my home electronics will be in use while there. Wife says she wants to take her curlers and hair dryer (why? she's a 60 year old woman... who's she trying to impress... it certainly isn't me) so I still need to get a transformer.

so I still need to get a transformer.

Definitely buy/rent/borrow a high wattage transformer (2000+ watts). I don't know how many times I've had friends plug heat source appliances (hair dryers, toasters, curling irons, clothes irons, George Foreman grills) into it and fry the transformer and outlet because it was a low wattage transformer.
