Serious problem in iphoto09 ver 8.1.1!

I have about 2500 B&W photos to import and iphoto says that they are unrecognizable!

Plain old black and white .jpgs

Help!

OK some research reveals that the problem might be that there is no color info in the files (well duh, its black and white). I'd hate to have to "correct" the problem by batching them all and applying color info to them all. Time and space wasting.

Help.

To the best of my knowledge, iPhoto does not care whether a JPG is colour or grayscale.

Is it possible these B&W files are saved in some other pallette (like LAB)?

Can you open them in any other program (like Preview, GraphicConverter, et al?)
