trouble installing software

Im trying to install Final Cut Express 4 on my girlfriends MBP 17" (no snow leopard) and when i double click to install nothing happens except on the dock is acts like is about to make a new icon then stops and nothing happens, same thing happens when trying to download Microsoft Office 08, just did an update so i have no idea whats going on. Theres 101gb left on the HD but nothing will install
