I have Excel on my IMAC, it locks up quite frequently. Any solutions to this?

I sorted that issue by going to iWork. Have you checked it out it imports all M$ files and can export in M$ as well as others;

Click for full size

Only showing Word here in Pages 09 but does same for excel.

Are the files that lock up rather large? (How many kb or mb?)

Thanks to those who responded.

I am operation osx 10.5.8 and have installed Apple and office updates. Currently office 8 for mac version 12.0. I use excel all day long - some large files (few megs)

I have looked into iworks 09 and it sound great. I downloaded the trial version. It also locked up.

When my computer locks up the spinning wheel is visible but I cannot do anything. I wait and wait but eventually all I can do it a hard shutdown and restart. Excel reopens with the files wanting me to resave them.

It is a random problem, not daily, but frequent.

Thx for your help

When Excel locks up, is there an error message?

If so, what does it say? If not, exactly what happens when it "locks up"?

No, just the spinning wheel forever.

The current version of Office is 12.1.7. Looks like you need to update Office, which you can download from the Microsoft website.

It might be time to use the Remove Office tool and reinstall it.

Have had good luck deleting preferences file

Running Snow Leopard. When I get repeated lockups I've had good results exiting (or killing) Excel and deleting the preferences file ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Excel.plist
