SnowLeopard to Vista, cant see the PC.

I have a Macbook pro, and a desktop running Vista64.

Both are in the same workgroup.
On the vista machine I see both the mac and the PC in the network.
I can browse, add, remove files on the mac from the PC.

I cannot even see the PC on the network from the mac... all i see is the router.

I have SMB sharing enabled on the mac.


what else am I missing?

Are you sharing files on your Vista machine? The SMB sharing settings in System Preferences shares a folder on your Mac. This does not share files from your Windows machine.

You not only need to turn on file sharing on the Vista machine, but you also have to share something for it to be seen.

Also, if you have a 3rd party security suite, make sure you've opened it up for file sharing. 9 times out of 10, that is what causes issues with OS X browsing XP/Vista/7 shares.

Everything is set up correct on the vista box,
I'm sharing an entire drive.
No software is preventing the vista box from being visable to the mac.

You could try "manually" connecting to your Windows box from OS X. In Finder, go to Go > "Connect to Server...". For "Server Address", type: smb://<ip address>. Replace <ip address> with the IP address of your Windows box. If that doesn't work, I would suggest checking the firewall settings on your Windows machine.

that worked, the PC now shows up in Network, but only as an IP.

A bit ad-hock, but I guess it will do.

I have to manually connect to my FreeBSD SMB server VM once in a while even though it should (and sometimes does) show up automatically. This could be because I'm learning FreeBSD though...

Name resolution issues are usually due to NetBIOS traffic being blocked. Are you sure you're not running any kind of security software?
