This may be a stupid question but how can I get my contact list opened when I have an IM window open? I know some IM clients allow you to option click on the app and 'show contact list' but there are others that do not let you do this. The only way to get around it is to close the IM window and click on the app again.

Well that may all depend on which IM client you are using. Most likely, it's a menu option under "Window". In the case of Adium, the command is COMMAND-L.
