Trying out alert sounds

How do you play sound files to try them out without them being added to iTunes Lib and have to go to the trouble of removing them manually? Pls don't suggest putting them in sound folder to try them out, did that and since they were new, they were added to Lib. What a pain, and a stupid idea from mac.
