I was considering the WD MyBook for Mac, but the reviews on Amazon are uninspiring. So I was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions. Thanks!

My pick would be FW800 - certainly makes for speedier backups on a Mac.

i was talking of an enclosure which has Firewire 800 connectors - La Cie has them, not sure of others. eg. when i started a transfer of files to HD using USB the advisory said 33 hours - stopped transfer and set it up with Firewire 800 and it took 44 minutes.

Ah. Thanks. It makes sense "FW" would stand for Firewire...sorry, I sometimes need to be hit over the head with a hammer.

Why in the world don't we find Firewire on more PCs if its so much faster than USB?

Remember the old VHS and Beta scene with videos, there is even a sort of parallel with M$ versus Apple/Amiga/Atari/etc. Probably all about advertising clout.

I've had a 500gb Western Digital MyBook Studio drive for a few months now. Works great with my Mac and my WinXP machine. SUPER quiet and firewire 800 is the way to go! ;D

Nice drive.
Yes you can use it on both machines provided you partition it, and format in the correct format for each.
