Is there a way to make finder sort my files automatically instead of having it all jumbled up every time I open a new directory and having to sort the files manually?

Sure. Finder > View > Show View Options

Select your sorting method in "Arrange by", then click "Use as defaults" at the bottom.

Or,

...secondary click (right or control) on the window and choose SVO from the contextual menu. On the fly, so to speak, just choose Arrange By. The latter might be useful for windows that you set to another option before setting the default in SVO.
