OSX install from scratch on a macbook pro (late 2008)

I lost the reinstall discs for my macbook pro so if i buy some new ones will that work to reinstall OSX (bearing in mind the hard drive is completely wiped). It's just i read somewhere that the reinstall discs have to be run from an operating system.
