Connect Macbook to TV

I have a 42LG30 42" LG LCD HDTV and I am using a VGA cord to connect my Macbook. The problem is, whenever I connect the TV comes up as saying, "Would you like to enjoy this device?" but then says Invalid Format on the Input Screen. I have purchased Display Config X and tried many many resolution types but my display settings will not automatically detect the resolution of the LG display. I have also tried shutting them both off then plugging in and just about any other combination of off and on that you can have and nothing is working.

Which MacBook do you have - e.g. are you using a mini-dvi to VGA or mini-display port to VGA adapter? and did the adapter come from Apple?

I have the last generation white macbook (not the new generation) which I believe comes with the mini port and the adaptor is an apple product.

That would be a mini-DVI to VGA adapter.

I will assume that you have disconnected and reconnected the adapter and cable and re-connected them during your attempts already. (Whether they appear to need it or not.)

From the sound of it, you may have already done all this. But, the only things I can recommend are:

1. On the TV, go into the Picture settings and reset the RGB-PC mode back to defaults.



2. After that, same place, select Resolution and make sure it is set to 1366 x 768.

3. On your Mac, use Display Config X and set it to the following, particularly the horizontal and vertical frequencies.



4. Reboot - with the TV on first and already set to the VGA input.

If all your devices are working properly, you should be good to go.

At this point, you've done everything you should have to do to get it working. If it's not, then need to troubleshoot to determine where the fault lies... MacBook port, adapter, cable, TV port. The only way to do it is try connecting the Mac to another VGA monitor and/or connecting another VGA output to the TV and switching adapter and cables out.

If you need to carry the MB to work and try it on a monitor there or friend/family...

You can also try LG's live chat support to see if they have a clue as to the cryptic error message - link.

This works great but the only problem is that on the picture menu the rgb button is not lit up or available to select

Try:

TV input set to VGA without the Mac connected (or just shut down)
TV input set to VGA with the Mac connected and running
TV input set to something other than the VGA

If none of those allow you to select the RGB-PC, then I'd say the TV has a problem and it's time to contact LG.

thank you for your help, i will be trying this later when i get home. On a side note, display config will not let me use a 1366x768 res as it automatically switches to 1368

That shouldn't be a problem.

You could also try using the Displays preference pane.
Only suggested display config x since you'd already paid for it.
Plus, I never had to do any playing around with the vertical and horizontal frequencies on my Mac.
Thought that may be easier to do with config x.

I'd probably also try the 1360 x 768 if no joy with the 1366/1368.
