need help please

Hi there new to mac's, and i have my 3 email accounts setup in mail, and i was deleting some junk mail and such, then tried to put the mac to sleep and said it couldn't as there was something wrong with deleting one of the files in mail. now mail won't shut down and i can't put the mac in sleep mode....can anyone tell me what is wrong or how i can go about getting mail to shut down so i can put the mac to sleep....
