4gb vs 8gb

So i just got a new mac book pro (13") with 2gb of ram.. I use mostly for mild C programing and alot of school work, eventually ima start using mathlab and matcad on it.. Should i upgrade to 4 or to 8gb? is the $200 extra worth it to get 8gb??

Also can i buy any pc3 1066? or it has to be specific brand or specific specs??

And last when i bought my system in best buy the ac power connector looked like a litle bar, when i got the ac connector (one that goes into the laptop magnet one) was a square looking one... This means i got an older mac book pro instead of the new one???

Having too much memory is never going to cause you problems, if anything you might not end up using it all if you don't run memory intensive applications. But if the $200 or whatever it is to go to 8GB is something that doesn't bother you, then by all means go for that..

All modern OS' use available memory very efficiently, so having more can allow many applications to operate at their full capacity..

I'd recommend getting the memory from Crucial, never had a problem with them, pricing is very good and its definitely going to be 100% compatible with your system.

MATLAB will love the extra RAM when you get into complex models etc...

4gb will be about $150 and 8gb about $500 so its $350 the difference... umm i can do that or save a bit and get an imac.. ummm

well i cant find it cheaper than that... i need pc3 8500 right? (will it run anything higher then 8500???))

Wow ram prices have really gone back up ! I put the 4 gig kit into my MacBook last may for $49.00 !

Either way you're going to have to pull the two modules that are currently in your MBP out and replace them with 2 x 2 GB or 2 x 4 GB. I personally would go with the lesser expensive upgrade. As far as MatLab is concerned, the 4 GB is fine. You'll never use anything over that anyway unless you're planning on running several virtual machines from Fusion or Parallels.

I recommend buying memory from here. I like dealing with OWC because they're Mac specialists. Crucial would be my second choice.
