I have created a playlist in iTunes - with about 100 tracks. Each of the tracks already has album artwork. Is it possible to set my own artwork to just that playlist, or will this wipe the artwork from the actual songs?

How do i do this? I don't want to accidentally wipe the original artwork and have to find it again.

No, sadly not, it will automatically add the artwork to the individual tracks in the albums they came from.

Your best bet is to duplicate (either via iTunes or in the Finder) all of the songs files for the songs in the playlist and keep them in a separate folder. That way you can have custom artwork without messing up the original files. I do this with one of my playlists.
