I had a new hard drive installed for Christmas, a 500 GB Western digital for my late 2007 MBP, and problematically, there is no new availability on the drive.

Disk Utility lists the Capacity as 465.6 GB, the Available as 1.3 GB (which is true), and Used as 147.4 GB.

When I ⌘+i the Hard Drive the capacity, it gives the capacity as 148.73 GB.

What can I do to make the OS realize the available space? Thank you for the help.

that seems very odd. Is the entire thing formatted properly.. or is their a giant chunk of unallocated space the computer isn't reading?

that would be the first place i'd look.

It really sounds like whoever installed the drive did not partition it properly. Open up Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and see what it shows.

Who installed this drive? Did they image your old drive to the new one?

applications > utilities folder > Disk Utility

click on the top option which should be your whole hard drive.
then you'll see a partition tab on the right. Click on the tab.

It should look something like this. Full drive capacity formated into 1 parition named "HAL9000"

I think there's also some strange partitioning.

The plot also thickens: upon verification it says Invalid Node Structure.

Here here are screenshots to make sense of:

There is something wrong there. Also the partition is supposed to be a GUID and not Apple Partition Map for Intel Macs.

hmmm... that is odd.

What i would do might not be the only option, but i personally can't think of any other way to fix it. So if you want to wait for other input feel free.

I would backup my files, boot from the install disc erase the entire drive using disk utility. then format for GUID partition (under options) then reinstall the OS on the entire volume.

notice how in my screenshot at the botton it says "partition map scheme : GUID partition table" and yours says "Apple Partition Map" you need the GUID partition scheme.

expect to spend about 2-3 hours backing up your files, reformating, and reinstalling your OS.

You have to use GUID on an Intel Mac. Below is my C2D Mini.
