1) Open Terminal

2) Type in the following:

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true

3) Restart Safari

That's it! Now links in Safari will always open in new tabs as opposed to new windows (which the feature in Safari Preferences doesn't always support).

Merry Christmas!

Not wishing to quell enthusiasm, but doesn't R-click > Open in New Tab do the same thing, albeit not by default?

Would you believe me if I said I'm still using an old Apple Pro "zero" button mouse, or do I have to upload a photo? :p

I thought the same thing as you guys, but read this ^ twice. Like, when is that not "supported"?

I don't know about for the rest of you, but, some links would still open in a new window even with the settings in the preference pane set to "open links in new tab".

All links can open in new tabs if you hold the Command button while clicking ;)

Enter the same code, but instead of "bool true" type "bool false".

Then restart Safari.
