gmail problems with safari 4 at mac os 10.6

I was using gmail on my safari browser for some time and since yesterday it stopped functioning complaining that my browser is not supported by gmail. The browser was trying to find a path to my gmail account switching every second from /mail.google.com/auth..... to /mail.google.com/mail..... but nothing happened. I don't have any google gears, they are not available for 10.6 system yet. What can I do to improve it? I DO NOT want to use google chrome. If nothing will work, I'll just switch to firefox...

What did u do yesterday? updates? Are you on 10.6.2?
