Hi
I bought a generic 4 port hub which is supposed to be compatible with macs.
I plugged it into the mac usb port then plugged my usb modem into one of the hub ports. My isp icon appeared on macbook screen but when I tried to connect to internet, no luck.
I took it out and plugged it into mac port and it connected immediately. So, can someone tell me if the hub is defective or whether I have missed something here. How do I check that the hub has been 'recognised' by my mac? I am a new mac user and still finding my way, so responses in clear layman's terms would be much appreciated. Thanks

As a suggestion, powered hubs work much better and do not draw so much from your Macbook. If it is working for the time being, it is recognised.

Thanks for that. So... a powered hub- you mean one you plug into an electrical socket at one end and the macbook at the other? Can I just get one of these from **** Smith Electronics perhaps?

You should be able to find one from practically any electronics store - online or brick & mortar.
